Travelers Home Insurance Review: Where the Claims Reputation Holds Up
Travelers' homeowners product is rarely the cheapest in the market — but its claims reputation is consistently among the strongest. Here's where it earns the premium delta and where it doesn't.
✓ What we liked
- Among the strongest claims reputations in homeowners insurance
- Endorsement library is broader than most competitors (especially water backup, equipment breakdown)
- Bundling with auto produces above-average savings
- Underwriting appetite is broader than carriers that pulled back in 2023–24
! What could be better
- Premiums run 8–14% above the market median
- Local agent quality varies — independent-agent model means experience isn't uniform
- Some coastal-state withdrawals leave gaps in availability
Travelers is one of the largest property and casualty insurers in the U.S., but its homeowners book is quieter than its commercial business. For consumers, the reputation is consistent: solid policy language, capable claims handling, premium that's above the cheapest carrier but below the premium-tier carriers like Chubb or AIG.
Across 211 reader survey responses with Travelers homeowners claims in 2024 plus quotes pulled in 18 representative ZIPs, here's the picture in 2025.
Pricing
For a typical 2,500 sq ft single-family suburban home (8-year roof, no recent claims, $400K dwelling, $200K personal property, $300K liability):
- Travelers: $168/month average
- Lemonade Home: $138/month
- Hippo: $142/month
- State Farm: $158/month
- Liberty Mutual: $172/month
- Chubb: $245/month (premium tier)
Travelers is roughly 9% above market median. Not the cheapest — and not trying to be.
What Travelers does well
Three things stand out:
Claims handling. From our 211 survey responses, 86% rated their experience good or very good, with a median first-payment time of 9 days. That puts Travelers behind USAA but tied with State Farm for the top tier of mass-market carriers.
Endorsement library. Travelers' standard policy form is broader than the market average, and their optional riders are well-priced. Notable inclusions:
- Water backup endorsement (sewer/sump pump failure) — $7K-$15K coverage typically $40-$80/year
- Equipment breakdown (HVAC, water heater, major appliances) — typically $40-$60/year
- Scheduled personal property (jewelry, art, instruments) — competitive rates
- Replacement cost on personal property as standard, not optional
Underwriting appetite. While many carriers pulled back in 2023-24 on roof age and prior claims, Travelers continued writing — including roofs through 16 years in many states (with appropriate adjustments). This matters for owners of older homes.
Where it falls short
- It's not the cheapest. If price is your primary criterion, Lemonade, Hippo, or State Farm will usually beat Travelers' quote.
- Independent agent variability. Travelers homeowners is largely sold through independent agents. Agent quality and responsiveness vary. Ask around locally before binding.
- Coastal-state availability. Travelers withdrew from some coastal markets (notably parts of Florida and California wildfire zones) over 2022-24. Verify availability for your specific market before assuming it's an option.
Bundling
Travelers' bundle savings (auto + home) are above average. We saw bundle discounts of:
- 12-18% off the auto premium
- 5-9% off the home premium
For a typical bundle, that's $400-$700/year in savings. If you're willing to consolidate to Travelers for both, the bundle math is genuinely competitive.
Coverage details to know
A few things to read carefully on a Travelers homeowners policy:
- Wind/hail deductibles are higher in many states (1-2% of dwelling) than the standard property deductible. Calculate the dollar exposure.
- Roof coverage may step from RCV (replacement cost) to ACV (actual cash value) at certain ages or in certain states. Get this in writing.
- Mold sub-limit is $10K standard. If you're in a humid market, consider adding the higher-limit endorsement.
Travelers' policy reads cleaner than most. The endorsements are well-priced. The claims experience is consistent. You're paying for those things — and most readers find the price-to-experience ratio reasonable.
Who Travelers is right for
- Owners of older or higher-value homes (where coverage breadth matters)
- Bundlers (auto + home together with Travelers)
- Anyone who values claims reputation over the cheapest quote
- Coastal owners outside the markets Travelers has exited
Who should look elsewhere
- Owners with a preference for instant-issue carriers and tech-first experiences (Lemonade Home, Hippo)
- Newer homes in competitive markets with very tight pricing (multiple carriers will undercut)
- Owners in non-coastal lower-risk markets where price is the primary criterion
For most readers in the "I want a real homeowners product I can rely on at claim time," Travelers is the carrier I quote first. The premium delta is real but earnable on the back end.

Hail damage claim, $18K. Travelers paid in 14 days, full replacement, no friction. After two prior carriers gave me hassle on smaller claims, Travelers earned my loyalty.

Premium was $340/yr more than Hippo. Went with Travelers anyway after my neighbor told me her Hippo claim took 9 weeks. So far no regrets.

Independent agent makes a huge difference. My agent has been responsive, knows the policy. Friend with a different Travelers agent has had a rougher time.

Water backup endorsement saved me $11K when my sump pump failed. Most carriers wanted extra to add. Travelers had it bundled affordably.

Renewal jumped 14% with no claims. Shopped, came back to Travelers after their agent matched. Lesson: shopping is the only thing that keeps any carrier honest.
