Hippo arrived in 2017 with a different idea about what homeowners insurance should feel like. The pitch: faster quotes, smart-home device integration, an app instead of a 1-800 number, and proactive maintenance prompts.

Eight years in, with a public IPO and a few rounds of restructuring behind them, Hippo is a real homeowners option in 37 states. The question is whether the experience matches the pitch in 2025.

How Hippo prices in 2025

For a typical 2,200 sq ft single-family suburban home (no special risk factors, 8-year-old roof) in a representative ZIP code, Hippo quoted between $118 and $172/month, averaging $142/month. That puts Hippo:

  • About 4% below State Farm
  • About 8% below Travelers
  • About 11% above Lemonade Home (where available)
  • Comparable to Liberty Mutual

The pricing edge is real if your home is well-maintained and you have a few smart-home devices. The smart-home discount is genuinely meaningful — up to 13% off for documented installation of water leak sensors, smoke detectors, and burglar systems.

The smart-home angle

This is the most differentiated piece of Hippo. Their smart-home discount program is structurally better than competitors:

  • Free Notion sensors at policy issue (in many states)
  • Discount applies after install verification, not just promised at quote
  • Includes water leak detection (the highest-payoff smart-home device for homeowners insurance)

For a tech-comfortable household, the smart-home program lowers premium by $80–$200/year, often more than offsetting the device cost in year one.

Claims experience — the asterisk

This is where Hippo's reputation gets uneven. From 192 reader survey responses with Hippo claims in 2024:

  • 66% said the claim experience was good or very good
  • Median time to first payment: 11 days (legacy average is 8 days)
  • Escalation rate: 18% (industry average is 12%)

The geographic variability is striking. California and Texas readers reported the most friction. Florida readers (where Hippo writes through Spinnaker) reported the cleanest experience. Midwest readers were average.

If you're going to underwrite Hippo's pricing edge against a legacy carrier's claims experience, do the math on the actual marginal cost of switching back. A $300/year premium savings can disappear quickly if a claim takes 8 weeks instead of 10 days.

Underwriting and renewal

Two specific things to know:

  1. Roof age matters more than you'd expect. Hippo regularly declines or limits coverage on roofs older than 12 years. Several legacy carriers will quote at 14+ with proper documentation.
  2. Renewal non-renewal after a single claim is more common. From our reader data, ~14% of claimants experienced non-renewal at the next cycle. The legacy carrier average is closer to 6%. Plan accordingly.

Coverage features worth knowing

  • Service line coverage (sewer, water main from street to house): Available as a low-cost rider, often $40–$80/year. Genuinely useful for older properties.
  • Equipment breakdown (HVAC, water heater): $30–$60/year. Worth it if your appliances are aging.
  • Mortgage protection at no extra cost in some markets.

Who Hippo is right for

  • Newer homes with newer roofs, no recent claims, in non-coastal states
  • Tech-comfortable owners willing to install smart-home devices
  • Quote-shoppers who want a fast online experience

Who should look elsewhere

  • Coastal homes with older roofs
  • Homes with prior claim history (Hippo will often non-renew)
  • Anyone who wants a phone-first claim experience or local agent relationship

The honest verdict: Hippo's quote is worth getting. Just don't bet your entire homeowners coverage on the cheapest line — pair it with a Travelers or Liberty Mutual quote at the same coverage levels and pick the carrier whose service profile matches your risk tolerance.
