Healthy Paws Pet Insurance Review: After Five Years and Three Big Claims
Healthy Paws was the carrier we recommended most often three years ago. The 2026 read — after rate hikes and a customer service shake-up — is more complicated. Here's the honest update.
✓ What we liked
- Unlimited annual coverage with no per-incident or lifetime caps
- Strong claims reputation — 91% paid in full
- Cleanest single-deductible structure for multi-condition pets
- Decade-plus track record as a credible carrier
! What could be better
- Senior pet rate increases have been aggressive in 2024-2026
- No wellness add-on (intentional, but limits flexibility)
- Customer service has been uneven through 2025
- Renewal premiums on senior pets often outpace Trupanion now
I've been writing about pet insurance since 2019. For most of those years, Healthy Paws was the carrier I recommended most often. The product was simple, the pricing was fair, the claims reputation was best-in-class. The 2026 read is more nuanced.
Here's the honest update.
What Healthy Paws still does well
The structural simplicity. One annual deductible. Pick your reimbursement (70/80/90%). No annual cap. No lifetime cap. No wellness rider to evaluate. The product is the most straightforward in the market.
The claims experience. From 421 reader survey responses with Healthy Paws claims in 2024-2025:
- 91% said the experience was good or very good
- Median time to reimbursement: 7 days
- 94% of submitted claims were paid in full (without re-submission)
These remain class-leading numbers. Trupanion's reimbursement is higher (94% vs 91% in full), but Healthy Paws is faster on routine claims.
The carrier strength. Healthy Paws is underwritten by Chubb, which has an A++ AM Best rating. The carrier-level financial backing is among the strongest in pet insurance.
What's changed since 2023
Senior pet pricing has gotten aggressive. This is the most significant change. Healthy Paws' renewal premium increases on pets aged 8+ have been steeper than the carrier's earlier years.
From our 2025-2026 reader data:
- Pet age 4-7: median annual increase 7-12%
- Pet age 8-10: median annual increase 14-22%
- Pet age 11+: median annual increase 18-28%
For comparison, Trupanion's age-based increases have been more uniform (8-15% across age ranges). The result: a Healthy Paws customer who started cheaper than Trupanion at year 1 may be paying more by year 7 or 8.
Customer service variability through 2024-2025. Reader complaints about long hold times and slow email responses peaked in late 2024. Improvements have rolled through 2025. The 2026 read is better but not yet back to pre-2023 levels.
Underwriting tightening. Healthy Paws has tightened underwriting on certain breeds with high orthopedic claim rates (large breeds with hip dysplasia history) and on pets with even minor pre-existing notes. Several readers reported declines for borderline profiles that Healthy Paws would have approved in 2021-2022.
Pricing in 2026
For a healthy 4-year-old medium-mix dog at 80% reimbursement, $250 deductible:
- Healthy Paws: $48/month
- Lemonade: $36/month
- Pets Best: $38/month
- Embrace: $44/month
- Trupanion: $58/month
For an 8-year-old medium-mix dog (same coverage):
- Healthy Paws: $84/month (up from $58 a year ago for renewal customers)
- Trupanion: $94/month (more linear increase from age 4)
- Embrace: $76/month
For an 11-year-old:
- Healthy Paws: $128/month
- Trupanion: $138/month
The senior-pet pricing gap to Trupanion has narrowed dramatically. At ages 9+, the two carriers are approximately equivalent on price — and Trupanion's per-condition deductible structure is structurally better for chronic conditions.
When to choose Healthy Paws in 2026
Healthy Paws still wins for:
- Young to middle-aged pets (under age 7) without orthopedic predispositions
- Multi-condition pets where the annual deductible math is simpler — Healthy Paws' single-deductible structure is cleaner than per-condition
- Cost-conscious shoppers in the 4-6 year-old pet range where premiums haven't yet started the steeper increases
- Owners who specifically don't want a wellness rider
When to look elsewhere
For senior pets (8+), Trupanion's per-condition lifetime deductible structure is increasingly the better fit. Run quotes for both and compare.
For young pets where price is the priority, Lemonade and Pets Best are 25-35% cheaper than Healthy Paws at like-for-like coverage.
For pets with chronic predispositions (Goldens with orthopedic risk, Berners with cancer risk), Trupanion is structurally better at any age.
What we'd actually do
For a new pet under 5 years old: get a Healthy Paws quote, a Trupanion quote, and a Lemonade quote. If Healthy Paws is within 15% of Trupanion at issue and your pet has no breed-specific risk factors, take Healthy Paws. The simplicity is real.
For a pet 6+: get Trupanion and Healthy Paws quotes. Compare on premium and on the per-condition vs annual deductible trade-off. Pick based on your pet's specific health profile.
For an existing Healthy Paws customer at the renewal of a senior pet: don't autorenew. Run fresh Trupanion and Embrace quotes. The market may have moved on you.
What I'd hope changes by 2027
Healthy Paws' product is still strong. The two areas that need to improve:
- Senior pet pricing — the recent increases have damaged the carrier's reputation with long-tenured customers
- Customer service depth — hold times and email response times need to return to 2021-2022 levels
If those improve, Healthy Paws returns to "first quote" status for me. As of 2026, it's "first or second quote, depending on pet age" — still credible, but no longer the obvious default.

Year 5 with Healthy Paws. Three claims totaling $11K, all paid in full at 90%. Premium has crept up about 18% over 5 years. Still cheaper than the alternatives at year 5.

Renewal increase at year 7 was 22%. Aggressive. Switched to Trupanion which was actually cheaper for my 9-yo. Healthy Paws was great until it wasn't.

Customer service improvements in 2025 are real. Got through in 8 minutes vs 28 minutes a year ago. Still working on it but the trend is right.

Filed our first claim — $4,200 for our cat's pancreatitis. Paid in 6 days at 90%. Smoothest experience we've had with any insurance product.
